I checked out and read a couple of books from the library over the past few days (Libby app, my beloved) and I guess I'll talk about them here.
The first book was
Every Heart a Doorway because the concept of a school for former portal fantasy protagonists sounded very interesting to me. I'd also heard someone say that they would have liked the book better if it hadn't been a murder mystery and I'm inclined to agree with them. I still had quite a good time, but I think the emotional conflict of wanting to go back to a place you can't go back to was more compelling and I wished the book had focused on it more.
I also read
When the Moon Was Ours because I remembered reading
an interesting Mob Psycho 100 fic a couple years ago that the author said was inspired by it. The MP100 fic doesn't have much in common with
When the Moon Was Ours aside from style and general aesthetics (and it sadly seems to be abandoned), but I still recommend it because
When the Moon Was Ours has a really fascinating style and aesthetic. It's really dreamlike, but also has a bit of a fairytale feel. However, it's also grounded enough that it doesn't feel like a fantasy novel despite its many fantastic elements. I mean this as a compliment, even though I like fantasy novels. It just feels like a story that takes place in the real world even though real people don't grow flowers from their wrists.
I would have read it for the style and aesthetics alone, so imagine my delight when I found it also had a pretty compelling plot too. If I wasn't reading on my phone (and didn't have a self-imposed ban on using my phone while in bed) I probably would have read the whole thing last night.
