I'm just going to make a new one of these and that way I can keep the one from last year as a time capsule of sorts.
  • Transformative Works Policy: I'm generally okay with them as long as I'm credited. This is included in my ao3 profile.

  • Current Passion: Similarly to last year, Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan and Omniscient Reader, but also, I've gotten into MP100 again due in part to the new season coming out. Like my interest is nowhere near where it was at the height of my Mob Psycho obsession back in 2019 but I'm enjoying that the MP100 fandom is a bit more active again.

  • Where to Find Me: I'm [tumblr.com profile] recklessracoon on Tumblr. I don't really post on there, but I guess you can go check it out if you want to see a bunch of fanart, meta and shitposts that I enjoyed. I'm also [archiveofourown.org profile] I_Wish_To_Remain_Nameless on ao3 if you want to check out my attempts at writing fanfiction.
  • Anything Else: I finished reading Worm by Wildbow last year and you can read the posts I made about the experience here. Oh yeah, now's probably a good time to mention that I'm fine with people commenting on old entries.

I am proud to announce that I have finally done something with my Neocities account. That something is mirror my unmarketably weird Saiki K fanfic, Dreams of Tanabata, there. The website is fairly rudimentary but I did draw some cute little chibis for the forward and back buttons which you can see below the cut.

I am now current on The Summer Hikaru Died and I'm really enjoying it so far. I think it does a really good job exploring the tension inherent in its premise. Which if you didn't know is that a teenage boy named Yoshiki discovers that his best friend (who I'm pretty sure it's implied he had a crush on) has been replaced by some sort of horrific, otherworldly creature, but he still wants to be close to it because the creature is so very like his vanished best friend, so he does his best to continue on as normal in the wake of this revelation.
The not-Hikaru is inhuman enough to feel genuinely alien and not just like a human who can do some freaky body horror stuff. He's also characterized with a really compelling mix of danger and almost childlike innocence.
The dynamic between him and Yoshiki
kind of reminds me of Ringo and Ecolo, though it's darker and more fucked up. I guess I'm just a fan of the complications and tensions inherent in the dynamic between a misfit teenager and the eldritch abomination that's imprinted on them like a baby chick.

Okay so I just reread Inside again and I've got a theory. Technically I already had this theory since shortly after my October reread but I wanted to reread it again to make sure evidence bore it out and it did. I think that Akechi is the Dark Menace. Firstly, he is small enough to pull off that hiding inside the chair strat which is a vital prerequisite for any suspect to have. Secondly the Dark Menace seems interested in engineering situations that cause Saiki's powers to reactivate and Akechi both has a believable motivation for that and is morally grey enough to repeatedly threaten Kaidou's wellbeing to do it. Akechi's also probably the only person outside of Saiki's immediate family to know that Kusuo used to be psychic come to think of it. Thirdly Akechi is definitely up to something given the way he seems to be working with Toritsuka and Aiura.
I also noticed on this readthrough is Aren mentioning how Akechi looks disgusted when he talks about Kuriko and I think despite how Aren interpreted the situation that was probably more disgust with what was done to her rather than disgust with what she became as a result of that.
So, what I think happened is that when Akechi met Kusuo again he was very confused that his bestie had detransitioned, lost their psychic powers, and developed a chronic illness that makes them super brainfogged all the time, as well as being upset that Saiki doesn't remember him and replaced him with Kaidou. Then the murder bedragon snake incident or whatever happened at the sports festival occurs, Saiki instinctually activates what's left of her powers to save Kaidou, and Akechi realizes his beloved friend isn't as gone as he thought they were and starts making moves to get them back. Kusuke showing up to chew out the teachers probably help Akechi push the last few pieces about what's up with Saiki into place too.
However, even if I'm right I don't doubt that Akechi is genuinely trying to improve Kusuo's situation though he's probably going to find himself offered a position on the receiving end of Aren's fists when Aren figures out he's the one behind the Dark Reunion stuff.

I got my download of the Omniscient Reader zine I ordered last April and had kind of forgot about. Hopefully I will receive my physical copy soonish, I really enjoyed the stories and art pieces in it and would love to see them in a more physical form.I don't usually read ORV fanfic because of how remarkably satisfied the novel left me but there are some really talented fic writers in this fandom. It's not their fault that the only things I'm looking for in ORV fanfic are:
  1. YooHanKim getting together in a more official capacity,
  2. Transfemme Yoo Joonhyeok (it's not a game I have any skin in so to speak, but I became rather fond of the headcanon after I saw a pretty convincing argument for why it would work thematically),
  3. Post-scenarios fluff of the Kim Dokja Company hanging out with each other and doing mundane domestic stuff, and
  4. the occasional excellently written oddity that I couldn't possibly have known I would have wanted such as this bizarre dating show AU that works way better than it has any right to (I'm sad it seems to be abandoned).

I thought I’d share my Saiki K playlist. It’s just a bunch of songs I like that I think fit him rough arranged by where I feel like they fall on his character arc. Justifications for my selections under the cut.
I spent way too long writing this all out )
This is more or less cross-posted from tumblr because I spent Like an hour explaining my song choices and therefore want as many people to see as possible.

This year I'd like to write more and maybe just make more art in general. I think that having an activity where I can maybe make some little thing that I'm happy with would be a good way to feel more empowered. Writing fanfiction is a great excuse to research stuff too.
I'd also like to get obsessed with something new since I'm getting kind of Saiki K and I don't want to burn myself out on it as completely as I did on Mob Psycho 100. Maybe Touhou since there's a lot of content out there for even before getting into the reams of unofficial stuff.
I also should spend less time on Tumblr because it's been tending to make me feel bad lately.

This week I finished rereading Oatmealcrisp's Future Diary inspired Saiki K fic which works way better than the extreme tonal clash of source materials would have you believe. I highly recommend it to people who'd like to see the world's normalest teenage boy freak out and make a bunch of poor decisions after being forced into a death game where he's only surviving because a strange, scary (but handsome) teenage boy who is willing and extremely able to commit horrific acts of violence for his sake has latched onto him for unknown reasons.
I'm actually quite fond of fics that explore fucked-up relationship dynamics when they're written by somebody who actually understands that the dynamic that they're depicting is in fact fucked-up and is capable of handling such material with some degree of tact and grace. I'm historically pretty lukewarm on the yandere trope (though I did listen to Smoke and Mirrors by LittleJaneyCakes a lot back in the day because it slaps) but this fic actually pulls it off pretty well and I think I can understand the appeal a bit better after reading it. Plus, it has a recurring theme of what loving someone actually means which is an excellent theme for a yandere fic to explore. It helps that the most prominent yandere in this fic, Saiki Kusuo, is more the obsessive type than the possessive type (though both of the other characters that display yandere behaviors are possessive type yanderes to some extent).
Oatmealcrisp does a very good job of justifying Saiki's yandere behavior so he doesn't actually seem that OOC once you get the details of what's going on. He's just really going through it right now and has decided to devote himself to the protection of his favorite person (and fixate unhealthily on him) to keep himself going at least until he can get his revenge on god for tearing out a defining part of him and entering a bunch of people he cares about in a death game. Oatmealcrisp is also good at coming up with fun and creative new ways to make the situation worse whenever the protagonists start get too comfortable, including perverse incentives, cognitohazards, and love-triangles.
Overall, it's a good fic to keep in my pocket or when I want a stressful piece of fiction to distract me from stressful things in real life.

I got my hands on a copy of Noragami volume 25 today and read it and it was a great decision. I am quite sad that most western anime fans don't read manga so I can't talk about anything after season 2 because these last couple of arcs been really great.
Spoilers... )
Also I think it was very funny to go from the serious emotional moment at the end of the volume to the omakes. The mood whiplash isn't as severe as it was for the later Girl from the Other Side volumes but it was still there.

I'm not the first person to think this about Worm but I would have liked Grue's character arc to get just a little more closure. Not even really by changing how things played out but I would have liked him to either have survived Gold Mourning or having his death come up before the epilogue. I mean I don't really mind killing him off for his little sister's character development but having him die off-screen and not even telling the reader that it happened until the epilogue was kind of a weird decision especially given that he didn't have much page time after his interlude. Honestly I wouldn't mind the way things played out for him if I thought I'd be able to find interesting fanfic about him but I don't really think much of my chances for that.
I'm not even a huge Brian fan or anything. I just think Brian is more interesting then people give him credit for even if I like Aisha better.

On a lighter note would have liked to see more girl espers in Mob Psycho as well as more screentime for the (non-Tome) girls who were already there. Fortunately Gittetj is including an esper girl as part of Shou's new friend group of awful (complimentary) teenage girls in their delightful, soul-wrenching, Shou-centric fic. Said fic addresses another minor gripe I have with Mob Psycho which is that Shou is a much more interesting character than his shit dad but his dad gets more narrative focus (probably because Touichirou works better as a foil to Mob but still I'm bitter). At least I can get my desired Shou arc from the End of the World as You Know It since the Shou characterization in that is good enough to pretend it was canon.

Today I'm going to talk about Oatmealcrisp's Saiki K fics because I really like them. They're easily one of my favorite writers in Saiki K fandom. I'd actually been reading their Saiki K stuff for around a year by the time I read the manga. I discovered them through their Saiki K and Mob Psycho 100 crossover which I liked enough to that it made me want to check out their other Saiki K fics.
A hallmark of their Saiki K stuff is the way they place Saiki in positions of extreme vulnerability in spite of, or maybe even because of, his incredible power. Other recurring themes include the importance of setting boundaries in relationships, Saiki passing out in public, powers as disability, jokes from canon being played dead seriously for drama/angst (mostly that the Saiki family dynamics are kind of fucked) and, lately at least, cat motifs for Saiki.
Oh and KuboSai (Kuboyasu Aren/Saiki Kusuo). Lots and lots of KuboSai. It's their favorite ship and shows. Not only do they have several fics focused on the pairing, it's also their go to secondary pairing to throw in when they want to add a love triangle. I'm personally neutral on KuboSai (and most ships involving Kusuo honestly) but Oatmealcrisp's sizable volume of work on the subject has managed to warm me to the pairing a little bit.

I can really put whatever I want on here can't I? Anyway I should say upfront that I'm probably aroace so the idea of actually having sex with any of these characters kind of ruins things. Even so I still think they're attractive and specifically attractive to me rather than thinking in a detached way that they were made to be attractive (though most of these were). Also these entries aren't really in any sort of order.
With that out of the way let's get started... )
And that's about everything. I got up at five AM to make this post for some reason and should probably go eat breakfast now.
i_wish_to_remain_nameless: picture of a pale girl dressed in red with a red flower in her black hair. Her red eyes stare at you unnervingly (Default)
I'm rereading Omniscient Reader, considerably slower this time because I'm busier and also because it's easier to peel myself away now that I already know how the plot goes. It's a different experience the second time around. Like for one thing the theater dungeon feels very different. I found it a little dull the first time around but it's much more engaging when you can put it in the context of what ORV has to say about stories and the retelling of them. Also it's way easier to see how unhinged Kim Dokja's actions are from an outside perspective.
I've finally gotten to the point in my reread where Han Sooyoung joins the party and I'm very happy. Also I'm almost at the part where I really got hooked last time which I am simultaneously excited about and a little nervous that once I get there I'll end up spending all my free time for the next few weeks reading this.
I still love this book so much. It's has some :| parts and the translation kind of sucks but it's still very enjoyable for me. I really like the way it's constructed and how it makes use of motifs as well as the character dynamics. I'm trying to get one of my discord friends into it because I think they'd enjoy it and also am curious what they'd think. However when I try to talk about it I tend to become somewhat incoherent with excitement and I don't want to come off as annoying. They have it on their radar now though so maybe they'll check it out sometime.

So I finished Worm yesterday. I was correct in that arc 26 was the last arc before entering the endgame.
I have a lot of things to say and most of them are spoilers )
Anyway reading Worm was an enjoyable experience and I really liked a lot of the characters. In retrospect. don't think it needed to be as long as it was but it was so impressively gripping that I didn't really have any issues with the pacing at the time. A lot of the interludes were really good and I enjoyed it's flirtations with cosmic horror (as well as horror in general honestly, with maybe the exception of some of the gnarlier body horror).
I don't know if I'll read Ward (it seems to have brokered mixed reviews) and if I do it won't be for a while. I might check out some fanfiction because I would like to see some of these characters in lower stakes situations and in my experience fanfic is a good place to look for that. I'm not really interested in alt!power Taylor (at least yet) though, because her bug control power fits her so well. At least compared to like Izuku, who I don't feel the power of punch really good at the risk of breaking his bones is nearly as good a fit for especially since he apparently gets better at not breaking his bones later on and that's the most interesting part of the power for him. (Judging by my BNHA fic reading proclivities I seem to think resurrective immortality or some other sort of being really good at not dying power suits him much better).
Anyway my initial impression of the top rated Worm fanfics on ao3 was somewhat discouraging (at least as far as stuff that I want to read now goes) but  I'll probably have better luck if I look on tvtropes since they seem to love Worm over there.
I'd also like to to talk about my Worm ships a little bit. I felt validated to see that Taylor/Lisa (apparently called smugbug which is a great shipname) is a popular ship in this fandom because when I was reading I thought they had some tension and that it could be fun. I also think Taylor/Rachel (apparently called wolfspider which is also a good shipname though not as good as smugbug) could be interesting. Smugbug is canonically homoerotic like besties in a nineteenth century novel and wolfspider is canonically homoerotic like rivals in a shonen series.

I was planning to read more before making a post but with the way arc 26 is starting off I think I should write about the last two arcs before I head into what might be the end game. I've been meaning to do this for the past couple weeks but I've been very busy with finals and too tired from those to do anything fun. I'm almost done though.
I also discovered that tumblr user Akirameta also seems to be a member of the started reading Worm because of See You In The Dark club. That makes at least three of us (including me)
Anyway Spoilers... )

I finished the Bonesaw interlude of Worm and man I feel really bad for Bonesaw. Well, Riley. That was more of a surprise than it should have been I suppose given how many other antagonists have been humanized in their interludes.
I'll make a proper entry on these last couple arcs later.
i_wish_to_remain_nameless: picture of a pale girl dressed in red with a red flower in her black hair. Her red eyes stare at you unnervingly (Default)
I'll admit I came up with this entry title ages ago and was thrilled when this arc gave me the perfect opportunity to use it.
Just finished arc 23 of Worm and while this isn't really a good stopping place if I don't make an entry now, I'll have even more to cover and I'll forget to talk about the earlier stuff. I don't want that because I really enjoyed arcs 20 and 21.
I can't talk about why I liked them without getting into spoilers though... )
Anyway, I think I'll talk about chapters 22 and 23 under their own cut because they were pretty different and I enjoyed them in a different way than 20 and 21.
Spoilers for Cell and Drone )
I like that Taylor manages to simultaneously come up with really clever and resourceful plans and make incredibly terrible decisions because she is afflicted with being 16 and her life is spiraling out of control.
i_wish_to_remain_nameless: picture of a pale girl dressed in red with a red flower in her black hair. Her red eyes stare at you unnervingly (Default)
I'm ready to start arc 20 of Worm whenever I start reading it again. I'm really enjoying reading this again, but I'll be pretty busy this month, so I probably won't be able to finish it until next month. Ah, it's ironic though that I decided to take a break from reading Worm during finals time last semester because I was stressed from all the final projects I needed to do, barely read it all during both winter and spring break, and then finally read like three arcs in a single weekend because I'm once again stressed about all the final projects I need to do.
Anyway thoughts )
I will say I think Worm's doing a pretty good job keeping the human element present. Like a big part of why I've never gotten into mainstream superhero stuff is that the worlds in those tend to feel kind of, how to put this, unlived in? Like it doesn't feel like anything interesting really happens in them outside of crisis, but they don't feel like they're bearing the strain of existing constant crisis either and it's really hard to imagine what day to day life is like in them. (I guess I'm really into the intersection of the fantastic and the mundane, which is probably why I like Diana Wynne Jones books so much). Admittedly this is just an impression I've gotten and might not actually be a problem with as much mainstream superhero stuff as I think it is. Anyway, Worm's good at not doing this. Despite all the crazy stuff that's been happening it still feels like normal stuff matters.
i_wish_to_remain_nameless: picture of a pale girl dressed in red with a red flower in her black hair. Her red eyes stare at you unnervingly (Default)
I checked out and read a couple of books from the library over the past few days (Libby app, my beloved) and I guess I'll talk about them here.
The first book was Every Heart a Doorway because the concept of a school for former portal fantasy protagonists sounded very interesting to me. I'd also heard someone say that they would have liked the book better if it hadn't been a murder mystery and I'm inclined to agree with them. I still had quite a good time, but I think the emotional conflict of wanting to go back to a place you can't go back to was more compelling and I wished the book had focused on it more.
I also read When the Moon Was Ours because I remembered reading an interesting Mob Psycho 100 fic a couple years ago that the author said was inspired by it. The MP100 fic doesn't have much in common with When the Moon Was Ours aside from style and general aesthetics (and it sadly seems to be abandoned), but I still recommend it because When the Moon Was Ours has a really fascinating style and aesthetic. It's really dreamlike, but also has a bit of a fairytale feel. However, it's also grounded enough that it doesn't feel like a fantasy novel despite its many fantastic elements. I mean this as a compliment, even though I like fantasy novels. It just feels like a story that takes place in the real world even though real people don't grow flowers from their wrists.
I would have read it for the style and aesthetics alone, so imagine my delight when I found it also had a pretty compelling plot too. If I wasn't reading on my phone (and didn't have a self-imposed ban on using my phone while in bed) I probably would have read the whole thing last night.

This morning it occurred to me that Sunny from OMORI is a shockingly good fit for the Accursed miraculous arc from Chuubo's. Headspace works really well for a sanctuary and he even has a world-breaker's hand with the way he denies upsetting truths so hard that they disappear from his subjective reality (it's definitely a banishment version of the WBH too).
