I'm ready to start arc 20 of Worm whenever I start reading it again. I'm really enjoying reading this again, but I'll be pretty busy this month, so I probably won't be able to finish it until next month. Ah, it's ironic though that I decided to take a break from reading Worm during finals time last semester because I was stressed from all the final projects I needed to do, barely read it all during both winter and spring break, and then finally read like three arcs in a single weekend because I'm once again stressed about all the final projects I need to do.
I love Tattletale. She's probably my favorite Undersider and definitely my favorite exposition machine I've ever come across in a piece of fiction. I watched in awe as she brought her plan to overthrow Coil to fruition and then in concern as she engaged in increasingly risky behavior during arc 19.
Arc 17 had a lot of good borderline horror content. I can see why they call the Simurgh the death of hope now. I had not guessed that the Travellers were gamers from another world. It's kind of neat that they were like an evil version of the teenagers taken to another world to fulfill some great destiny trope. It was depressing but I enjoyed it. I'm glad that at least some of them got to go home, though they'll have to live with the trauma of what they've done for the rest of their lives.
Arcs 18 and 19 did a pretty good job getting around my general ambivalence to epic fight scenes with a lot of participants. Actually, thinking about it Worm's fight scenes have been pretty good at that in general. Taylor has a pretty interesting power to explore the different ways it can be used in combat and Wildbow is pretty good at advancing the narrative during fights.
I think I've heard that Wildbow eventually stopped doing Patreon bonus interludes because it messed with the pacing. If that's case, I hope that happens soon. Not that I dislike the interludes but at this point I am more invested in the main narrative and would like it to be interrupted a little less often.
I will say I think Worm's doing a pretty good job keeping the human element present. Like a big part of why I've never gotten into mainstream superhero stuff is that the worlds in those tend to feel kind of, how to put this, unlived in? Like it doesn't feel like anything interesting really happens in them outside of crisis, but they don't feel like they're bearing the strain of existing constant crisis either and it's really hard to imagine what day to day life is like in them. (I guess I'm really into the intersection of the fantastic and the mundane, which is probably why I like Diana Wynne Jones books so much). Admittedly this is just an impression I've gotten and might not actually be a problem with as much mainstream superhero stuff as I think it is. Anyway, Worm's good at not doing this. Despite all the crazy stuff that's been happening it still feels like normal stuff matters.
